A first look at the future home of U.S. Space Command is beginning to take shape, as the command’s top general unveiled a conceptual rendering of its planned headquarters at Redstone Arsenal.

On Monday, Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of U.S. Space Command, shared the design during a relocation update with Huntsville and Madison County civic leaders gathered in Washington, D.C., as part of the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber’s annual trip to the nation’s capital.

The rendering offers the first public glimpse of the command’s permanent headquarters, envisioned as a large, modern facility centered around a distinctive multi-sided design. Previous plans have outlined a campus of roughly 460,000 square feet on a 60-acre site at Redstone Arsenal.

The facility is expected to house more than 1,300 personnel once fully operational, with a workforce composed of both civilian employees and uniformed service members.

Progress underway

The unveiling comes as the relocation of Space Command to Huntsville continues to gain momentum.

Earlier this month, the first wave of personnel from the command’s intelligence directorate began operations at Redstone, marking the start of on-the-ground mission activity in North Alabama.

Defense officials have said the number of personnel in Huntsville is expected to grow to around 200 by the end of the year as interim facilities on the Arsenal are brought online.

Construction of the permanent headquarters is anticipated to begin in 2027, with completion projected in the early 2030s. Officials have said the move will occur in phases as new facilities are built and operations transition from Colorado.

“Our move to Huntsville is moving forward,” Whiting told lawmakers in a recent congressional hearing, noting that final decisions on construction partnerships are nearing.

Building on earlier milestones

The rendering marks the latest step in a relocation effort that has steadily advanced over the past year.

In December, federal and state leaders gathered at Redstone Arsenal to formally mark the future site of the headquarters with a sign unveiling ceremony, calling the move a major milestone for national defense and for the region.
