Rocket City named a top destination by travel site

HUNTSVILLE –  What do Huntsville; Iceland. and Umbria, Italy all have in common?

They were all named one of the “The 10 best places to travel in September” by The Points Guy.  The travel website and blog covers the travel industry and offers tips for accumulating miles through credit card reviews.

The Rocket City’s upcoming South Star Festival was featured heavily in the write-up along with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center for a dose of cosmic exploration, or wander through the Huntsville Botanical Garden.

“Why visit Huntsville in September? For one thing, you can belt out your favorite anthems under the Alabama stars with fellow music lovers at John Hunt Park at the South Star Festival on Sept. 28-29. With 20-plus artists performing over two days, including Gwen Stefani, Blink-182 and Ludacris, the festival promises unforgettable moments. Beyond the music, September offers pleasant weather to explore Huntsville’s lush parks and rich history comfortably. Check out the U.S. Space & Rocket Center for a dose of cosmic exploration, or wander through the Huntsville Botanical Garden, where the summer blooms transition to vibrant fall colors. Huntsville in September is a harmonious blend of musical excitement and serene outdoor beauty.

“TPG tip: Stay at 106 Jefferson for an upbeat and modern vibe to match your thrill-filled visit. Rates start at $163 or 51,000 Hilton Honors points per night.”

The site, founded in 2010, suggested 10 travel destinations for the month of September, calling the kick off to fall “the unsung hero of travel months.”  The list, in order of appearance, is:

  • Huntsville
  • Iceland
  • Jackson Hole, Wyo.
  • Umbria, Italy
  • Braemar, Scotland
  • The Hamptons, N.Y.
  • The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
  • Southern China
  • Napa Valley, California.
  • Zurich

While quite an eclectic travel list, the website isn’t off base – travel to the Rocket City and Madison County increased by 15% last year.

According to the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Madison County brought in nearly 4 million visitors, representing roughly $2.4 billion in economic impact in 2023 alone. The “significant boost” from travel and tourism also supports over 23,000 jobs in the area.
