SCOTTSBORO — Things are taking off, economy-wise, in the Scottsboro-Jackson County area.
Business is growing. The population is growing.
And more things will be taking off, aviation-wise, at Scottsboro Municipal Airport.
To help the airport update its master plan to respond to the growth, the Alabama Department of Transportation has provided a $10,450 grant. Also, the airport will receive $188,107 from the Federal Aviation Administration and the city of Scottsboro will provide $10,450 in matching local funds for a total value project of $209,008.
Scottsboro Municipal is among seven airports that received funding from ALDOT for improvements.
- Bay Minette Municipal Airport will receive $165,471 from the Federal Aviation Administration and $9,193 from a state grant for land acquisition. The airport will provide $9,193 in matching local funds for a total value project of $183,864.
- Foley Municipal Airport will receive $305,193 from the Federal Aviation Administration and $16,000 from a state grant to construct a hangar. The City of Foley will provide $16,000 in matching local funds for a total value project of $320,000.
- The Prattville Airport will receive $203,540 from the Federal Aviation Administration and $11,308 from a state grant to reconstruct a taxiway. The airport will provide $11,308 in matching local funds for a total value project of $226,156.
- The Shelby County Airport will receive $881,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration and $48,944 from a state grant to construct a hangar. The Shelby County Commission will provide $48,945 in matching local funds for a total value project of $978,889.
- The Southwest Alabama Regional Airport will receive $739,458 from the Federal Aviation Administration and $41,081 from a state grant for the acquisition of land. The airport will provide $41,081 in matching local funds for a total value project of $821,620.
- The Wetumpka Municipal Airport will receive $151,112 from the Federal Aviation Administration and $8,395 from a state grant to acquire an avigation easement. The airport will provide $8,395 in matching local funds for a total value project of $167,902.
These grants are made possible through ALDOT’s Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program. Through the program, ALDOT can provide financial assistance and other engineering or technical services to airport owners regarding the acquisition, construction, expansion, maintenance, or operation of public airport facilities.
ALDOT anticipates awarding approximately $8 million in state funds to local airports during the 2024 fiscal year.
