Serena Williams to visit Girls Inc. of Huntsville for 50-year celebration

HUNTSVILLE — As part of its 50year celebration, Girls Inc. of Huntsville is welcoming 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams to the Rocket City.

The Fuel Her Fire Sneaker Gala will also feature auction packages, including tickets to the U.S. Open, ESPY Awards and more. The semi-formal affair – sneakers are required – is set for Oct. 27 at the Von Braun Center.

“It’s time to wear your ‘sneaker gala look’ and join us for an evening of celebration filled with great food, a live auction, inspirational stories, and timeless memories,” said Stephanie Malone, executive director of Girls Inc.

Girls Inc. of Huntsville is a nonprofit organization that serves girls ages 5 -18 through after-school, fall break, spring break, summer camp and outreach programming. The nonprofit hopes to raise $500,000 to support activities such as STEM education, academic enrichment, and support, as well as expansion efforts within the next three years.

“We’d like to take a moment to thank you for being a part of this journey with us,” Malone said. “Because of you, we’ve been able to inspire and empower over 50,000 girls in our community since 1972.”

Located in the Richard Showers Recreation Center on Blue Spring Road, Girls Inc. of Huntsville offers a number of programs focused on health, academic enrichment, and life choices.

The Girls Inc. of Huntsville website said the organization focuses on “the whole girl”.

“She learns to value herself, take risks, and discover and develop her inherent strengths. The combination of long-lasting mentoring relationships, a pro-girl environment, and research-based programming equips girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers, and grow up healthy, educated, and independent.

“Informed by girls and their families, we also advocate for legislation and policies to increase opportunities and rights for all girls.”
