Shoals celebrates Independence Day with 39th Spirit of Freedom festival

FLORENCE — The 39th Spirit of Freedom festival will kick off Independence Day celebrations in the Shoals on Friday at McFarland Park.

Sponsored by Singing River Media Group and the City of Florence, the event will feature food, family fun, and fireworks. Food trucks will be ready to serve at 11 a.m. and live entertainment starts at 3 p.m. with Gary Nichols and Trey Nichols. The park is at 200 James Spain Drive.

Singing River Media Group, which includes WLAY, WVNA, WMSR, and WMXV radio stations, will also have a live remote during festivities at the park.

Other musical acts include Connr, Yes Trespassing, “American Idol” alum Cadence Baker, Carver Commodore, and Boomtown Saints. Nashville singer-songwriter and former Miss UNA Rachel Wammack will headline the show, taking the stage at 8 p.m.

At 9 p.m. the sky over the Tennessee River will light up as a fireworks display gets underway from a barge. Tune your radios to 101.5 FM, 105.5 FM, 100.1 FM, or 94.9 FM to listen to the celebratory soundtrack.

Is hanging out by the river not your thing? The Downtown Florence Alliance has you covered. Its First Friday will also take place from 5:30-9 p.m. on Court Street with vendors and downtown restaurants adding to the celebration.

The festivities warm up today from 5-8 p.m. at Lewis Field. Sponsored by the City
of Florence and Florence Parks & Recreation, Kids Fest will feature music, disc golf, inflatables, and a rock-climbing wall.

The best part? Free Kona Ice and free Texas Roadhouse kids’ meals will be available for the first 400 kids. Lewis Field is at 1050 Pruitt Street.
