U.S. Space Command leaders gathered in Huntsville this week for a two-day leadership planning event as the command continued to deepen its presence on Redstone Arsenal and advance plans for its permanent headquarters in North Alabama.
The event, hosted by U.S. Space Command Commander Stephen N. Whiting, brought together commanders, directors, deputy directors and senior enlisted leaders from across the command June 23-24 to discuss strategic priorities, operational challenges and warfighting readiness in the increasingly contested space domain.
Held primarily at the Von Braun Complex on Redstone Arsenal, the leadership planning event featured presentations from defense and industry leaders, including Dave Limp, Blue Origin CEO, and Austin Dahmer, performing the Duties of Deputy Under Secretary of War for Policy.
As part of the event, command leaders also toured key North Alabama facilities, including NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the local operations of the Space Development Agency, highlighting Huntsville’s growing role in the nation’s space and defense enterprise.
The visit also included the formal acceptance of an additional Redstone Arsenal facility that will support U.S. Space Command operations as the organization transitions personnel to Huntsville.
“I’m also happy this week to take control of this facility,” Whiting said in a video message released during the event. “This is our second facility here on Redstone where we are bedding down the 70 U.S. Space Command members who are now working from Redstone, well on our way to breaking ground on our permanent headquarters facility later in 2027.”
Whiting thanked local partners for supporting the command’s transition to Huntsville and described the new facility as another step in expanding Space Command’s operational presence in the region.
The command has previously announced plans to break ground on its permanent headquarters at Redstone Arsenal in 2027, with full relocation expected to occur over the following several years.
The leadership planning event marked the first time U.S. Space Command’s senior leadership team has conducted its semiannual gathering in Huntsville, highlighting the growing role Redstone Arsenal is expected to play in the command’s future operations.
The event comes as Space Command continues to shift personnel and capabilities to North Alabama while maintaining its focus on space warfighting, missile warning, satellite operations and protecting U.S. interests in space.
