High school students across the region will have an opportunity this summer to explore the legacy of Muscle Shoals music through a camp hosted by the University of North Alabama.

The week-long Summer Muscle Shoals Music Camp will take place June 8-12 in Florence. It’s open to students entering grades 9-12 during the 2026-2027 school year. The camp is designed to immerse participants in the region’s historic music culture while giving them practical experience in all aspects of musical creation, production and performance.

Hosted by UNA’s School of the Arts, the camp will connect students with professional musicians, songwriters and industry experts who have contributed to the Muscle Shoals sound.

“The camp gives high school students a unique chance to dive into the legendary musical heritage of Muscle Shoals while gaining hands-on experience in songwriting, recording, and performance,” said Janna Malone, chair of the David and John Briggs Family Department of Entertainment Industry and senior lecturer.

Throughout the week, students will participate in classes and workshops led by faculty and industry professionals. These include sessions held in local studios tied to the Muscle Shoals music legacy. Campers will also receive mentorship from artists, including Grammy Award-winning musician John Paul White and Bay Simpson, a former contestant on NBC’s “The Voice.”

A key component of the camp is a collaborative songwriting and recording project. Students will be placed into groups upon arrival and will spend the week writing, producing and recording an original song together. Participants will also have the chance to perform live on a historic stage.

In addition to creative instruction, campers will explore the region’s musical roots through a guided tour of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

Malone said the experience is intended to build confidence and inspire creativity while introducing students to the opportunities available in the music industry.

The application deadline is June 5. The cost to attend is $250. Students interested in applying can contact the camp at [email protected] or call 256-765-4559 for more information.
