HUNTSVILLE — While it’s not quite the nation’s “Manifest Destiny” from 200 years ago under President James Monroe, the city of Huntsville has been continuing a westward expansion of its own.
As the population grows to the city’s west, services are sought and provided for those residents.
And the latest move by Huntsville to provide those services will be a west Huntsville recreation center. Last week’s ground-breaking for the facility heralds in a year-long construction project to build a place to play in the city’s Fifth District.
“It’s an exciting step forward in our commitment to providing more quality-of-life amenities to all parts of the city,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “While this area has seen tremendous residential growth, it has lacked recreational facilities.
“That’s about to change.”
The one-story, 27,350-square-foot facility is at 150 Martin Road, just west of Zierdt Road. Its design mirrors the Mark Russell Recreation Center on Taylor Road in east Huntsville, which is typically one of Huntsville Parks & Recreation’s busiest centers.
It will feature a gymnasium with two basketball courts, two volleyball courts and three indoor pickleball courts. Sitework will also include three exterior pickleball courts and landscaping.
“This center will meet a growing demand for recreational opportunities and foster a vibrant and active community,” said District 5 Councilman John Meredith. “I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the city administration and my fellow council members for their dedication and support in making this project a reality.”
The new facility will raise the number of recreational and community centers to 15 throughout the City, complementing more than 65 public parks. Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett said the project will be a great addition to the City’s portfolio of recreational amenities.
“More importantly, it’s a testament to Huntsville’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality facilities for all our residents,” he said. “This center will serve as a vibrant hub for sports, fitness and community gatherings, fostering a stronger, more connected community.”
