Want to support Kids to Love and make history? Come eat a baked potato on Sunday.
LawLers Barbecue is inviting the community to The Orion Amphitheater on Sunday for “Potatoes With Purpose,” where thousands of free loaded baked potatoes will be served as part of an attempt to set a Guinness World Records title while raising money for Kids to Love.
The goal is to set the record for the most baked potatoes served in eight hours.
And yeah, eating one counts toward the cause.
“Potatoes With Purpose is really about what can happen when an entire community shows up for a great cause,” LawLers Barbecue President Scott Black said. “The world record gives us something fun to rally around, but the real record we want is seeing what we can accomplish together for Kids to Love and the children and families they serve.”
Organizers say the plan is to serve 5,000 LawLers signature pulled pork-topped Super Stuffie Taters. The event runs from noon to 4 p.m., or until the taters are gone.
According to the Guinness World Records website, the standing world record for the most baked potatoes served in a day stands at 3,784 pounds of potatoes set in June 9, 2012, in Juliaca, Peru.
Admission and the loaded potatoes are free, but guests are encouraged to donate what they would have spent on lunch to Kids to Love.
Founded in 2004 by Lee Marshall, the Madison-based nonprofit supports children in foster care and young adults aging out of the system through programs ranging from school supplies and Christmas gifts to education, job training, residential care and adoption services.
Kids to Love also operates Davidson Farms, a home for girls in foster care; the Whitaker Cottage Community for young women aging out of foster care; and KTECH, which provides technical workforce training.
For LawLers, the idea is to turn a Sunday lunch into something much bigger.
“The potatoes are free,” organizers said. “The opportunity to make a difference is priceless.”
Potatoes With Purpose is Sunday, Aug. 16, from noon to 4 p.m. at The Orion Amphitheater in Huntsville. Admission is free.
