Huntsville Hospital has awarded $600,000 through its 2026-2027 Community Health Initiative (CHI), providing funding to 11 nonprofit organizations working to improve health outcomes across North Alabama.

Hospital leaders announced the grants Tuesday during a presentation ceremony recognizing community partners that address critical health needs ranging from access to medical and dental care to mental health services, chronic disease support and assistance for underserved populations.

“As a nonprofit, community-based hospital, Huntsville Hospital is committed to improving the health of the communities we serve — both inside and beyond our hospital walls,” said Huntsville Hospital President and Chief Operating Officer Tracy Doughty. “That includes reinvesting in patient care, but also supporting incredible community organizations like these that are helping connect people with needed services and strengthen the health of our neighbors and region.”

The funding supports the hospital’s Jean Wessel Templeton Community Health Initiative, which has provided financial support to local health-focused nonprofits for three decades.

Organizations receiving funding for the 2026-2027 cycle include:

  • Boys and Girls Club
  • Clinica Medica Moscati
  • The Community Free Clinic
  • The Community Free Dental Clinic
  • Enrichment Center
  • HEALS
  • Kids to Love
  • New Hope Children’s Clinic
  • Parkinson’s Dynamics
  • Partnership for a Drug-Free Community
  • ShowerUp

Hospital officials said the initiative helps support organizations that often address health-related challenges before they become medical emergencies.

Now in its 30th year, the Community Health Initiative focuses on some of the region’s most pressing needs, including mental health care, medication assistance, dental services and chronic disease management.

“For 30 years, the Community Health Initiative has brought together people and organizations who share a common goal: improving the health of our community,” said CHI Chair Kerry Fehrenbach. “We are fortunate to have so many nonprofit partners working every day to support families and improve lives. Their impact can be seen throughout our community, and we are honored to support that work.”

Since its launch in 1996, the Community Health Initiative has invested nearly $15 million in more than 50 nonprofit organizations serving North Alabama.

Founded in 1895, Huntsville Hospital is an 881-bed nonprofit hospital and serves as the flagship facility of the Huntsville Hospital Health System. The hospital is the second-largest in Alabama and serves as a regional referral center for North Alabama and southern Tennessee.
