After 10 years, Walmart closing Neighborhood Market in northwest Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE — Huntsville’s first Walmart Neighborhood Market is closing its doors.

Citing the store’s lack of performance, Walmart said the Neighborhood Market at Oakwood Avenue and Jordan Lane will close Dec. 20.

The store opened with much fanfare, including elected and company officials and a drumline, in November 2014.

“We have nearly 5,000 stores across the U.S. and unfortunately, some do not meet our financial expectations,” said communications director Lindsey Coult. “While our underlying business is strong, this store hasn’t performed as well as we hoped.

“This decision was not made lightly and was reached only after a careful and thoughtful review process.”

Coulter said there are no other closings planned for the area. Walmart has two other Neighborhood Markets in Huntsville – Jordan Lane and Bailey Cove Road.

“There are no additional closures planned for this region at this time,” she said. “Walmart serves customers at 144 stores and Sam’s Clubs in Alabama, and we employ more than 42,328 associates in the state.

“Over the last few years, we have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in local communities through store remodels and the expansion of convenient services like online grocery pickup, grocery delivery, and in-store pickup.”

Coulter said the pharmacy staff will work with customers to transfer their prescriptions to another Walmart location.

All associates in the store are eligible to transfer to another Walmart store and will be paid through Mar. 7, she said. Eligible associates who do not transfer before that date will receive severance.
