Community input sought for Decatur’s oldest park

DECATUR — A two-day open house to review the Delano Park Master Plan gets underway next week.  The master plan update will feature findings from an earlier open house held in May. The two meetings feature both evening and daytime hours:

Operated by the Decatur Parks and Recreation Board, Delano Park was founded in 1887. Renowned New York landscape architect Nathan Franklin Barrett designed the 28-acre park.  Delano Park, named after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s mother, was dedicated in the 1930s and features historic WPA-era structures such as bandstand, bathhouse, Rose Garden wall and columns, Ft. Decatur, Girl Scout Little House.  

Today the park features a one-mile walking/running trail, tennis courts, two pavilions, a splash pad, playground, gardens and the Fort Decatur Recreation Center.
