Congressman Strong offers statement on fatal helicopter crash

HUNTSVILLE — U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia) has issued a statement following a fatal helicopter crash in Madison County. Authorities report a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed on Alabama 53 near the intersection of Burwell Road in Madison County Wednesday afternoon. There were no survivors from the crash that closed all roadways in area.

In a statement issued by his office, Strong expressed his condolences for those involved.

“My heart hurts for those who lost their lives in this tragic incident and for their families as they learn of this news,” says Congressman Strong.

Strong’s office says he is in continued communication with local and state officials and offers his condolences during this time.

Earlier today Redstone Arsenal leaders stated initial investigations have determined that the incident is not connected to Redstone Arsenal assets.

Redstone Arsenal provided a statement to local TV stations:

“Redstone Arsenal leaders are aware of reports of a helicopter incident near Highway 53 in Huntsville. First responders are on scene, and Redstone Arsenal is in full support of local authorities in their active investigation. Initial investigations have not determined that the incident is connected to Redstone Arsenal assets, and we will continue to support community authorities as the situation develops.”

According to unconfirmed reports, there were three on board at the time of the crash. While there has been no official statement at this time, it is believed to be a Tennessee National Guard helicopter on its way home from Fort Rucker.

Update 2/16/23:

Federal and State officials have now confirmed two Tennessee National Guard members taking part in a training mission were onboard the helicopter at the time of the crash.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee issued the following statement:

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey replied to Lee, “Governor Lee, Alabamians will continue to uplift in prayer the families affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said. “The Guardsmen who lost their lives today will be remembered as heroes. The people of Alabama stand with our neighbors in Tennessee.”
