Get-A-Way and grind! Huntsville skatepark hosting full day of activities

HUNTSVILLE – The city’s new skatepark has been a hit since opening last week, and that
success is expected to continue Saturday when the complex plays host to the inaugural Drop-in to Get-A-Way.

A crowded slate of events will be held from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. at Get-A-Way Skatepark in John Hunt Park. The agenda includes competitions including a Bowl Jam, music, food trucks, skate supply vendors and a free clinic for children with autism.

“It’s going to be another great day for Get-A-Way Skatepark and the City of Huntsville,”
Huntsville Parks and Recreation Director James Gossett said.

The Askate Foundation, which is based in Charleston, S.C., will hold the clinic for children with autism from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The non-profit was created to serve people with autism, but all events the foundation sponsors are neurodivergent friendly. Equipment and safety gear will be provided. Registration is required. Participants and volunteers can sign up for a time slot at www.askate.org/events.

The rest of the schedule will be held from 1-9 p.m.:

  • 1-3 p.m. – social media contest and bowl jam. Prizes will be awarded for longest grind, highest air and next trick.
  • 1-8 p.m. – skaters may post videos to Instagram of their “carves’’ over the Get-A-Way logo on the three-quarter capsule. The highest carve with the hashtag #GetAWaySkatepark wins the contest.

“It’s gratifying to see the overwhelming response to Get-A-Way Skatepark,’’ Gossett said. “Since the moment it opened, it’s been packed with people of all ages and skill levels.

“In addition to our local skateboarding community, we’ve met people from across the country who have come to skate this world-class facility.”

The city gives special thanks to sponsors Gold Sprint Coffee, Huntsville Coca-Cola, World
Conspiracy and Faith Skate Supply, as well as The Skatepark Project, Team Pain Skate Parks, Speedlab Wheels and Rage at the Rose Vert Contest for providing contest prizes.

Get-A-Way Skatepark opened Sept. 13 at John Hunt Park, 2151 Airport Road. Spanning 52,000 square feet, it’s one of the largest skateparks in the country.
