A Huntsville-based advanced optics company is preparing to showcase new technology on the global stage, highlighting the Rocket City’s continued role in cutting-edge defense innovation.
Polaris Sensor Technologies announced it will debut two new systems — PYXIS LWIR HD and SkyPASS Gen4 — at the upcoming SPIE Defense + Security 2026 conference later this month.
Founded in Huntsville in 2003, Polaris specializes in advanced optical systems used in applications ranging from missile defense to environmental monitoring, with more than $25 million invested in applied research and development.
The company’s newest product, PYXIS LWIR HD, is designed to address a longstanding challenge in thermal imaging: low-contrast environments where objects can be difficult to distinguish.
The system uses polarimetric filtering technology to enhance contrast and reveal subtle details in real time, helping users better interpret complex scenes.
“PYXIS LWIR HD is about giving operators clarity where they’ve traditionally had to rely on intuition,” said Dr. Laura Eshelman, Director of Product Development. “We’re revealing detail that standard thermal systems miss so users can make faster, more confident decisions.”
Polaris is also introducing SkyPASS Gen4, an updated navigation platform designed to operate in GPS-denied or degraded environments — an increasingly critical capability in modern defense and aerospace operations.
The system combines multiple navigation inputs, including star-field imaging and sky polarization cues, to provide reliable positioning without relying on GPS signals. It is also built with scalability and modular deployment in mind, allowing integration across a range of platforms.
“SkyPASS Gen4 is an important step in broadening access to reliable, GPS-independent navigation,” said Dr. Larry Pezzaniti, Polaris’ chief technology officer. “By focusing on scalability and efficiency, we’re enabling these capabilities to be deployed more widely without sacrificing performance.”
Both systems will be demonstrated at SPIE Defense + Security 2026, held April 26–30 in National Harbor, Maryland.
In addition to the new technologies, Polaris will showcase several of its existing sensing platforms, further underscoring Huntsville’s role as a hub for advanced defense and aerospace innovation.
