Huntsville Hospital breaks ground on $30 million emergency department in North Huntsville

As the Huntsville area continues to attract new residents, Huntsville Hospital Health System is expanding emergency care to keep pace with the growth and bring services closer to families in surrounding communities.

The system broke ground Wednesday on a $30 million freestanding emergency department in North Huntsville that will provide around-the-clock care for residents of the city and nearby communities, including Hazel Green and the Winchester Road corridor.

Health system leaders and community officials gathered to celebrate the start of construction at 10121 Memorial Parkway NW, near Bob Wade Lane and the Northern Bypass. HH Health described the project as the largest health care investment ever made in North Huntsville.

Construction is expected to be completed in December 2027.

“Our responsibility is to make sure people have access to the care they need, when and where they need it,” said Tracy Doughty, executive vice president of Madison County operations for HH Health. “North Huntsville is growing, and this is an important step in making sure emergency services keep pace with the community. We’re bringing the resources and expertise of Huntsville Hospital closer to the families who depend on us.”

The freestanding emergency department will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with board-certified physicians, CT and ultrasound imaging, and laboratory services. The site will also have a helipad.

Patients who need hospitalization or more specialized care can be transferred to an appropriate hospital for continued treatment. The additional location is also intended to help manage demand at existing emergency departments, including Huntsville Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center.

“North Huntsville is an important part of our city, and investments like this help ensure residents have the services they need as our community grows,” said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. “Having emergency care close to home gives families peace of mind and makes our neighborhoods stronger. We’re grateful to Huntsville Hospital for its continued commitment to the people who live, work and learn in North Huntsville.”

The project follows the June opening of Physician Care North Huntsville, a primary care clinic near Alabama A&M University. Together, the two facilities will expand primary and emergency care in an area the health system said has historically had fewer convenient health care options.

The North Huntsville facility is also part of a broader expansion of emergency services across Madison County. Crestwood Medical Center’s freestanding emergency department in Harvest opened in 2024, and HH Health plans to break ground on a Hampton Cove facility Nov. 4. Another location is planned for Madison.

HH Health’s network of community, nonprofit hospitals serves northern Alabama and southern Tennessee and employs more than 22,000 people.
