Huntsville Police to conduct DUI safety checkpoints Friday

The Huntsville Police Department will conduct a safety checkpoint Friday, May 1, as part of an ongoing effort to reduce impaired driving and improve roadway safety across the city.

The operation, led by the department’s DUI Task Force, will target drivers suspected of operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or other impairing substances. Officers will also monitor for additional traffic violations and unlawful activity.

“Impaired driving continues to be one of the most preventable causes of serious injury and death on our roadways,” said Sgt. Antonio Shorter of the HPD DUI Task Force. “These checkpoints are about prevention, accountability and ultimately protecting lives in our community.”

Drivers traveling through the checkpoint will be required to present a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and current vehicle registration.

Officials said checkpoint locations are selected using crash data and guidance from the North Alabama Highway Safety Office, with an emphasis on areas where enforcement is expected to have the greatest impact. Factors include traffic volume, crash history and trends related to impaired driving.

Potential checkpoint locations include major intersections and corridors across Huntsville, including Jordan Lane and Sparkman Drive, University Drive and Research Park Boulevard, and Cecil Ashburn Drive and Old Big Cove Road, among others.

Police are urging residents who plan to consume alcohol to arrange a sober ride in advance, whether through a designated driver or a rideshare service.

Anyone who suspects an impaired driver is encouraged to contact HPD’s non-emergency line at 256-722-7100 with details about the vehicle and its location. In emergencies, drivers should call 911.

The checkpoint is funded through a grant from NAHSO and will be conducted in accordance with state and departmental procedures.
