Storm sidelines Spann night as weather wins at Toyota Field

In a twist that practically wrote its own punchline, a night celebrating Alabama’s most recognizable weatherman was washed out by the very thing that made him famous.

The Rocket City Trash Pandas were set to host “James Spann Bobblehead Night” Tuesday at Toyota Field, featuring an appearance by veteran meteorologist James Spann. Instead, storms across the state forced Spann to remain in the studio, and eventually, the game itself was postponed due to inclement weather.

Team officials announced ahead of the game that Spann had been “requested to stay at the studio” as severe weather impacted parts of Alabama. Still, the organization pressed on with plans to distribute 1,000 bobbleheads to fans, noting the tarp was off the field and expressing hope the game could be played.

That optimism did not hold.

Tuesday’s matchup against the Tennessee Smokies was ultimately postponed due to thunderstorms, with a makeup doubleheader date to be announced within 48 hours.

Fans who braved the forecast were left with a uniquely on-brand souvenir: a bobblehead of a meteorologist who was, at that very moment, doing meteorologist things somewhere else.

Spann, based in Birmingham, is widely known for his live severe weather coverage and as founder of the Alabama Weather Network. His absence, while disappointing for fans hoping for autographs and a ceremonial first pitch, reflected the same dedication and real-time responsiveness that have made him a trusted and familiar presence across Alabama.

The Trash Pandas said Spann is expected to make a rescheduled appearance at Toyota Field later this season, presumably under clearer skies.
