Huntsville’s music community will gather later this month for a tribute concert celebrating the life and legacy of one of the city’s most influential blues musicians.
“A Night of the Blues Honoring Microwave Dave” is scheduled for Friday, March 27, at Mars Music Hall inside the Von Braun Center. The event will feature blues guitarist Stacy Mitchhart performing with the Otis Walker Band.
The concert begins at 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Mitchhart, described by organizers as a longtime friend of Dave “Microwave Dave” Gallaher, will headline the evening as part of a celebration of the blues music Gallaher championed throughout his career.
Representatives from the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation will also be on site during the event accepting donations to support the organization’s work.
Organizers say the tribute is intended to bring together musicians, fans and members of the community whose lives were touched by Gallaher’s music and mentorship.
“Dave’s passion for music and arts education touched countless lives in our community,” organizers said in announcing the event. “This special evening will celebrate his legacy through the music he loved.”
Gallaher died in February at age 80 after spending more than three decades performing and teaching in Huntsville’s music community. Known professionally as “Microwave Dave,” he fronted the band Microwave Dave & the Nukes and performed widely across the United States and Europe.
Beyond the stage, Gallaher was widely recognized for his commitment to music education. He frequently visited schools and community programs, introducing students to blues music and encouraging young musicians to pursue their craft.
His influence also helped inspire the creation of the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding access to music education and supporting youth programs across North Alabama.
Huntsville leaders have previously recognized Gallaher’s impact on the local arts community. In 2015, the city proclaimed “Microwave Dave Day” and presented him with a key to the city in honor of both his musical accomplishments and his dedication to mentoring young artists.
The upcoming tribute concert is intended to celebrate that legacy while continuing the mission Gallaher championed throughout his life.
Community members are encouraged to attend the free event and join Huntsville musicians in honoring what organizers described as “a Huntsville original.”
