Gov. Kay Ivey is encouraging veterans and active-duty military members to take advantage of Alabama’s outdoor recreation opportunities ahead of Memorial Day weekend and the summer travel season, highlighting free access to participating state parks and other benefits available to military families.

In a recent announcement, Ivey promoted Alabama’s Parks for Patriots Program, which provides free admission for veterans and active-duty service members to day-use areas at participating Alabama State Parks that normally charge an entrance fee. The program also offers a 15% discount on lodging at state park lodges, cabins and campgrounds.

“Throughout my time in office, supporting our veterans and active military members has been a priority,” Ivey said. “Their selflessness has made our freedom possible. I encourage our veterans and active-duty military members to enjoy Alabama’s beautiful outdoors and know we are forever grateful for their service and sacrifice.”

The Parks for Patriots program has been offered through the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources since the start of Ivey’s administration in 2017.

ADCNR Commissioner Chris Blankenship said Alabama’s public lands and parks serve as places of reflection while honoring those who have served in the military.

“Our State Parks and public lands are places for reflection and serenity, and they stand as a tribute to those who have served our great nation,” Blankenship said. “Providing our current and former military members with free admission to Alabama’s beautiful State Parks is just one of the ways we can thank them for their selfless service to the country.”

State officials also highlighted the historic connection between Alabama’s parks system and military service. Many structures still used throughout the state park system were originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, including projects completed by World War I veterans.

In addition to free state park access, Alabama offers several outdoor recreation benefits for veterans and military personnel, including discounted hunting and fishing licenses for disabled veterans, resident-rate hunting and fishing licenses for nonresident active-duty personnel stationed in Alabama, and waived license requirements for Alabama service members home on leave.

ADCNR also hosts two special waterfowl hunting days each year designated for veterans and active-duty military members.
