DECATUR – Nick Perkins has announced he will be entering the race for Decatur City Council.
Perkins is the brother of Steve Perkins, who was killed in September 2023 during a police-involved shooting tied to a contested vehicle repossession.
According to the announcement, Perkins is seeking the District 1 seat and is focused on promoting economic growth, practicing fiscal responsibility, and fostering community unity.
“This campaign is about creating good-paying jobs, vibrant neighborhoods, and a responsive city hall,” Perkins said. “Together, we will build a brighter Decatur. Let’s get to work!”
District 1 is represented by Billy Jackson, who recently announced his candidacy for Decatur mayor.
Perkins candidacy announcement in its entirety is below:
“Community leader and Decatur Youth Services coordinator Nick Perkins today launched his campaign for Decatur City Council, District 1. Perkins outlined an ambitious vision aimed at boosting local economic opportunities, ensuring responsible management of city funds, and promoting community unity.
“Perkins, who currently coordinates mentorship and workforce programs at Decatur Youth Services, highlighted his commitment to creating economic pathways that equip residents with the skills necessary for successful careers. ‘When we invest in people, we all benefit,’ Perkins said, emphasizing his plan for a school-to-work pipeline.
“A former campus safety officer at Alabama A&M University, Perkins understands the importance of public trust and accountability. His experience has fueled his commitment to an independent audit of Decatur’s budget, targeting wasteful spending to redirect funds toward public safety, education, and infrastructure improvements.
“Perkins noted the urgency of revitalizing District 1, pointing out vacant storefronts along Moulton Street as evidence of economic stagnation. He pledged to attract new businesses and transform local spaces into vibrant hubs for residents and visitors alike, stimulating economic activity and quality of life improvements.
“Transparency and unity form core pillars of Perkins’ campaign. He promises regular town halls and an open-door policy to ensure every resident’s voice is heard. ‘Unity begins with transparency,” Perkins stated. ‘Healing divisions must be our priority.’
“Perkins called on the community for active participation, urging residents to volunteer, engage neighbors, and vote on August 26th.”
“This campaign is about creating good-paying jobs, vibrant neighborhoods, and a responsive city hall,” Perkins said. “Together, we will build a brighter Decatur. Let’s get to work!”
