Off The Record: The latest rumors and rumblings in North Alabama

 Britt and Barrett

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt was recently spied lunching with none other than Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett in the nation’s capital. The two highly accomplished women enjoyed a midday meal following a chance meeting between the two. This isn’t really surprising considering the Supreme Court building faces the Capitol and is a mere three-minute walk a way. The get-to-business Britt and no-nonsense Barrett have apparently hit it off. One might assume they have much in common.

 Make mine a double shot

The 256 Today team is always busy gathering local coverage you can depend on. This sometimes requires lots and lots of coffee. On that note, please join us in rejoicing as yet another coffee joint celebrates it debut to the caffeine-craving public. The new Starbucks at Town Madison will be hosting its ribbon-cutting event next Friday. And there’s more brewing: “Trenta” size Starbucks stores are planned for Athens MidTown Centre (2,500 square feet) and downtown Huntsville (2,800 square feet).

 Seeing green

Speaking of Town Madison, we spied quite a few green cups at the Big Ol’ Ball Park Fair this past weekend. Madison’s first entertainment district was approved last November and allows customers 21 and older to purchase alcoholic beverages and carry them outdoors to drink within the designated boundaries of the district. While Huntsville has five districts sporting purple cups, Madison chose Kelly green as its go-to color. Perhaps in reference to the latter’s aim to “maximize arts and entertainment and maximize revenue”?

 Space Command decision

The two-year-long decision to move or not move Space Command continues to be delayed. This time the Air Force is doing “additional analysis,” which could be bad news for Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal. Though Redstone has come out on top in three investigative phases – more than any other candidate – it’s political wrangling that’s holding up what is, quite literally, a life-and-death decision.

 “The Joe” sprucing up

The formerly rundown Joe Davis Stadium is looking mighty good lately. The new home of the MLS NEXT Pro Huntsville City Football Club is taking shape ahead of the first-year team’s home debut in May. The grass is expected next week and the seats are in place – in alternating colors of blue and gray, matching the club’s colors.
