Work is officially moving forward on Calhoun Community College’s new Student Union building in Decatur, as the City of Decatur has issued a building permit for the $17 million project—marking a key step following last fall’s groundbreaking.

The approximately $17 million, two-story, 29,800-square-foot facility is designed to serve as a central hub for student life, bringing together dining, social, and academic spaces under one roof.

According to building permit data, the project is the largest construction project permitted in the Huntsville-area region during the most recent reporting period, highlighting continued growth across North Alabama.

In October, 2025, officials held a groundbreaking ceremony. College leaders said the new facility will address long-standing needs on the Decatur campus.

“A space like this has been needed for a long time,” said Calhoun Community College President Dr. Jimmy Hodges. “The new Student Union building represents progress, innovation, and our commitment to creating an environment where students can connect, have fun, learn, and truly feel a sense of belonging on campus.”

The Student Union is designed as a multifunctional hub for social activities, dining, and learning, with dedicated spaces for group collaboration, quiet study, and campus events.

A commercial kitchen—the first of its kind on campus—will expand dining options and create opportunities for future culinary programming.

The building will feature a two-story glass atrium serving as a central lobby, along with modern finishes, technology, and flexible indoor and outdoor gathering spaces designed to enhance student engagement.

Plans include active, student-centered spaces on the first floor—such as a coffee shop, bookstore, and dining area—while the second floor will house quieter areas including study rooms, a library, and computer training spaces.

“I am incredibly proud of Calhoun for continuing to meet our students where they are,” said Mark Salmon, chief facilities officer of the Alabama Community College System. “Facilities like this provide students with the resources and spaces they need to thrive.”

Huntsville-based Lee Builders is serving as the project’s general contractor, alongside a team led by Goodwyn Mills Cawood.

Students say the new space will play a major role in shaping campus life.

“This is something students have been looking forward to for a long time,” said student ambassador Tyler Manual. “The new Student Union will give us a place to hang out, study, grab lunch, or just meet new people between classes.”
