Rocket City to be rockin’ city for annual Music Cities Convention

HUNTSVILLE — While still maintaining its title as the Rocket City, Huntsville is changing its tune, so to speak, for a few days.

The city is hosting the 12th annual Music Cities Convention this week. The international meeting runs through Friday and features educational panels and roundtables providing insights how music impacts a city’s growth.

Music professionals scheduled to speak range from cultural economy advocates, to music managers, music and health specialists, directors of music and arts festivals, and venue managers.

Several city of Huntsville representatives will also participate, including Mayor Tommy Battle, Music Officer Matt Mandrella, Urban and Economic Development Director Shane Davis and Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Kenny Anderson.

The three-day event follows the publication of the Huntsville Music Audit and Strategy that
aimed at creating a more dynamic music environment, from education to creation, production and performance, in a way that strengthened the city’s economy.

There will, of course, be live music around town including local favorites Microwave Dave Gallaher and Dave Anderson. The venues include the Mars Music Hall, Orion Amphitheater and U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

There is a free concert Thursday in Big Spring Park West featuring Cedric Burnside and WANDA Band.
