HUNTSVILLE – The Salvation Army is marching in step with the changing times when it comes to giving.
The organization has relied on donations since it began giving aid to individuals and families in need since the 19th century through means such as the Red Kettle Campaign during the holidays. Shoppers can still drop coins and dollars into the kettles of the Christian-based outfit at malls and stores, but now there are other ways to contribute.
The Salvation Army has embraced what is quickly becoming a cashless society. In a news release, the nonprofit says everyone “can make a difference from their phones or computers at https://huntsvillekettle.org.’’
The organization also has included QR codes on Red Kettle signs and enables easy digital donations through Apple Pay, PayPal, or Venmo.
“This campaign isn’t just about raising funds; it’s about offering stability and solutions for individuals and families in need,” said Commanding Officer Maj. Richard Watts. “We face the challenge of meeting the sharp increase in requests for assistance while experiencing a drop in donations to our Red Kettles, primarily due to reduced foot traffic and a declining use of cash.”
The Salvation Army determined that higher inflation, combined with the end of government stimulus checks and increased mortgage rates, have pushed more working families into housing insecurity and financial hardship, making it difficult to afford essentials like food, transportation, and housing.
In addition to the new campaign, the Salvation Army invites the community to donate directly or inspire giving by starting their personal online fundraiser at https://huntsvillekettle.org.
“We’re excited about the opportunity for our community to set up their very own virtual red kettle, either as an individual or as part of a team,” Watts said. “Spread the word on social media and invite your friends, family members, or coworkers to donate and help reach your fundraising goal.”
In addition to providing holiday meals and gifts, donations help families remain in their homes and ensure food for those in need.
“Every dollar raised in our Red Kettle Campaign stays here in our community, making a direct impact,” Watts said. “It means a meal for someone hungry, keeping lights on for struggling families, and providing ongoing support and hope to those in crisis.”
Last year, the organization served over 15,000 individuals and families in need. The Salvation Army raised this year’s fundraising goal to over $150,000 to meet the anticipated increased needs this holiday season and beyond.
The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign is one of the world’s oldest and largest charitable campaigns. In its 133rd year, the campaign stands as a testament to compassion and commitment to providing help and hope to those in crisis. Each year, it raises millions of dollars nationwide, providing shelter, meals, financial aid, educational programs for children, disaster relief, and much more to America’s most vulnerable populations.
