SHEFFIELD — Football coach Johnny Wright is coming back to his old haunts. Then again, he never really left the place he calls to call home.

Wright has been named head coach at Sheffield High School, where he led the Bulldogs from 1987-99. He later held the same position at Dora, Hillcrest and Leroy. In retirement, he also volunteered at Sheffield.

“This has always been our home and our family is here,” Wright said.

During Wright’s first tenure, the Bulldogs made nine playoff appearances and won five regional titles.

“He’s going to bring the total package to us as far as academics and athletics and really help us bring some excitement to the school and the student body,” Sheffield principal Marcus Rice said in published reports.

Wright is a Colbert County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee. He replaces Brian Dickerson, who resigned after two seasons.

“I don’t want to be anywhere else and when this opportunity presented itself to come back into coaching here, I didn’t hesitate,” Wright said. “My wife even said she’s not seen me this excited over a coaching position.

“It’s where I want to be and what I want to do.”
