State dock building at Ditto Landing to get major facelift

HUNTSVILLE – A renovation project might not stir the imagination like the story of pioneer James Ditto entering a Tennessee River bend and happening upon the Chickasaw Old Fields, a settlement that would eventually bear the former’s name.

Or, the tale of how the future president Andrew Jackson and legendary folk hero Davy Crockett both caught a ferry at the site on their way to fight members of the Creek Nation in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, a collateral event of the War of 1812 that unfolded near Dadeville.

Monday, however, offered excitement nonetheless with the announcement of a major restoration of the state docks building at Ditto Landing on Huntsville’s southern tip. Most of the funds for the $10 million project will come from the budget of Phil Riddick, the District 5 representative for the Madison County Commission.

“These renovations will serve as our legacy project for the citizens of Madison County,” Riddick said during an on-site press conference. “We are excited to introduce this ambitious project, a transformative initiative aimed at revitalizing an existing 2 1/2-acre space into a vibrant outdoor destination.’’

Brandi Quick, executive director of the Huntsville-Madison County Marina and Port Authority, said the project should be an attraction for visitors and events.

“The renovations of the state dock building into a truly unique event space is the first major step towards our Master Plan we unveiled a few years ago,” said Quick. “We expect this to bring thousands of new visitors to Ditto Landing for weddings, family reunions, conferences, and other large gatherings.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to highlight Huntsville’s home at the midpoint of the Tennessee River.”

City Councilwoman Jennie Robinson, whose district includes Ditto Landing, envisions the project further highlighting the site.

“Ditto Landing has long been a hidden gem in our community,’’ she said. “The city is committed to helping more people discover the beauty of the Tennessee River by investing in new access roads and greenways at Ditto Landing.

“We support the new master plan and are proud of our partnership with the Ditto Board and the County Commission.”

Mac McCutcheon, chairman of the County Commission, said the improvements will enhance the quality of life for the area.

“Ditto Landing is one of the most picturesque locations in Madison County,” he said. “The location has many uses and provides a great get away for individuals and families. Commissioner Phil Riddick, the Madison County Commission and the Ditto Landing Team are investing in this Ditto Landing Project.

“Commissioner Riddick has stated, this project is about quality of life, and I totally agree. The project will have upgrades to the property and new venues for the visitors to enjoy and take in the beautiful views of the Tennessee River and all it has to offer.”

Once completed, the venue will seat up to 600 occupants for a banquet event, with tables and chairs, or space for 1,000 occupants for a seated concert or conference or up to 1,500 occupants for a gathering of a standing only event.
