Republican John Roberts drew a show of support from congressional and statewide candidates Tuesday night as U.S. Rep. Dale Strong, attorney general nominee Katherine Robertson and secretary of state nominee Caroleene Dobson joined supporters for a campaign event at The Ledges.

The Huntsville event brought together political and community supporters of Roberts, who is seeking to succeed retiring State Sen. Tom Butler in Senate District 2, which includes portions of Madison and Limestone counties.

The gathering builds on Roberts’ recent endorsement from Butler, who has represented North Alabama for more than three decades in the Legislature.

The evening’s speakers emphasized Roberts’ experience in economic development, workforce training and business, while Roberts acknowledged the competitive nature of the Nov. 3 election.

Strong points to growth, workforce needs

Strong, who represents Alabama’s 5th Congressional District, highlighted Roberts’ priorities and the importance of state leadership as North Alabama continues to grow.

“John gets it: workforce development, infrastructure, schools,” Strong said. “He stayed on message the entire campaign.”

Strong also pointed to U.S. Space Command’s relocation to Redstone Arsenal and the potential for additional defense investment through the Golden Dome missile defense initiative.

“We’ve got to have the right team together,” Strong said. “John is the guy who’s going to take this to the next level.”

Robertson emphasizes public safety

Robertson, the Republican nominee for attorney general, focused much of her remarks on public safety and the role of state legislators in shaping criminal justice policy.

She argued that the Senate needs members willing to support law enforcement and said she believes Roberts would provide that leadership.

“It’s not just about this area,” Robertson said. “He’s going to be important for the whole state, because Montgomery is a wild place and you need somebody with a backbone. I’m very honored to give John my full endorsement.”

Dobson’s personal connection to Redstone

Dobson, the Republican nominee for secretary of state, brought a personal connection to Huntsville into her remarks.

Her grandmother worked as a missile analyst at Redstone Arsenal for approximately 20 years during the 1960s and 1970s, she told the gathering, commuting from the family’s farm in Cullman.

Dobson said that family history gave her an early appreciation for Huntsville’s importance to Alabama and the nation’s defense.

She also stressed the importance of ensuring North Alabama’s economic interests are represented in Montgomery.

“I think Montgomery is sometimes in the dark about the challenges and opportunities here, and I can’t think of a better ambassador for this area than John,” Dobson said.

Dobson described Roberts’ background in real estate and workforce development as particularly relevant to the region’s growth.

Roberts looking toward November

Roberts thanked the hosts, featured speakers and supporters who have helped his campaign since its launch.

“We’ve had a tremendous level of support since the very beginning,” Roberts said.

He also acknowledged the challenges facing the district, including infrastructure demands, affordable housing, education and maintaining the economic momentum that has brought significant investment to North Alabama.

“The last 20 years of success have been tremendous, and many people in this room are responsible for that,” Roberts said. “But the next 20 years aren’t going to write themselves.”

Roberts said the district needs a strong working relationship among local, state and federal officials to continue attracting jobs and investment.

He also cautioned supporters against assuming the outcome of the election.

“This race is going to be very tight,” Roberts said. “The demographic shifts happening aren’t something Alabama has been accustomed to.”

Roberts has received endorsements from several business organizations, including the Business Council of Alabama, Alabama Realtors Association, Associated Builders and Contractors of North Alabama, Alabama Retail Association, Manufacture Alabama and Alabama Farmers Federation.

Roberts faces Democratic nominee Rudolph Drake in the Nov. 3 general election.
