As state Sen. Tom Butler prepares to close out more than three decades in the Alabama Legislature, he’s backing Republican John Roberts to take his place in Senate District 2.
Butler, who has represented portions of North Alabama during more than three decades in the Alabama Legislature, said he has known Roberts and his family for years.
“I’ve known John and his family for many years, and I know John will do a great job,” Butler said. “I thoroughly endorse him, and I’m proud that he is seeking this office.”
Butler’s legislative career began in the Alabama House in 1982. He later served in the Senate from 1994 to 2010 before returning to the chamber in 2018. His current District 2 includes portions of Limestone and Madison counties.
Roberts thanked Butler for his support and pointed to the retiring senator’s years representing North Alabama.
“Senator Butler has spent decades fighting for the people of North Alabama, and I’m honored to have his support,” Roberts said. “He has set an example of what public service should look like by always putting the people of his district first.”
Roberts said he hopes to build on Butler’s work and maintain a strong voice for the district in Montgomery.
Affordability has been a focus of Roberts’ campaign, including his support for eliminating Alabama’s remaining state sales tax on groceries.
“As a husband and father, I know how important it is to make every dollar count,” Roberts said. “Eliminating Alabama’s grocery tax would give families more room in their budgets and make a real difference in the cost of putting food on the table.”
Roberts works as real estate and development manager for Huntsville-based Freedom Real Estate & Capital and previously served as business retention and expansion director for the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber. He also co-founded the North Alabama Homebuilding Academy, a workforce development program focused on construction trades.
Alabama Senate District 2 covers eastern Limestone County and western Madison County, including portions of Athens, Huntsville and Madison. The general election is November 3.
