A new global supply agreement involving Toray Composite Materials America is expected to reinforce the strategic importance of the company’s manufacturing operations in Decatur, a key hub for advanced carbon fiber production.

Tokyo-based Toray Industries announced it has entered into a five-year carbon fiber supply agreement with Belgium-based Syensqo, effective January 2026. The partnership is aimed at strengthening supply stability for aerospace, space and defense applications.

While the agreement is global in scope, Toray maintains a significant footprint in North Alabama through its Decatur facility, which produces high-performance carbon fiber materials used in aircraft and defense systems.

The Decatur plant, operated by Toray Composite Materials America, is one of the largest carbon fiber manufacturing sites in the United States and plays a critical role in supplying aerospace manufacturers and defense programs.

The facility supports production from raw precursor materials through finished carbon fiber, serving both commercial and military markets.

Company officials said the agreement comes amid growing demand for advanced materials driven by the recovery of global air travel and continued development of next-generation aircraft.

“Through this agreement, both companies will work to enhance supply stability and resilience across aircraft, space & defense applications, thereby strengthening the global supply chain and contributing to long-term market growth,” the company said in its announcement.

Toray has continued to invest in its U.S. manufacturing capabilities, including recent expansions in Decatur to support increased demand tied to defense and aerospace programs. The facility has supplied materials for platforms such as commercial aircraft and space systems, positioning North Alabama as part of a broader global supply chain.

Syensqo, which develops advanced materials for industries including aerospace and electronics, does not have a manufacturing presence in Alabama but will rely on suppliers like Toray to support production needs.

The agreement underscores the continued integration of North Alabama’s industrial base into international aerospace manufacturing, with Decatur serving as a key production center for materials critical to modern aviation and defense systems.
