The University of Alabama in Huntsville College of Nursing is restructuring its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, transitioning to a four-semester format aimed at improving student success and meeting growing workforce demands.

University officials say the change, which takes effect in fall 2026, is designed to create a more consistent academic experience while better preparing students for clinical practice.

“This change reflects our commitment to ensuring that our program structure supports both student success and the evolving needs of the nursing profession,” said Dr. Karen Frith, dean of the College of Nursing. “By refining how and when content is delivered, we are better positioning our students to succeed academically and transition confidently into clinical practice.”

Under the new model, students will carry a more balanced course load of about 15 credit hours per semester. The revised schedule also aligns more closely with scholarship timelines and the needs of active-duty military students pursuing nursing degrees.

Dr. Sheila S. Gentry, associate dean for undergraduate programs, said the restructuring was informed by both faculty input and student feedback.

“This structure allows for a more cohesive learning experience, where students are building knowledge and applying it in practice in a more integrated and meaningful way,” Gentry said.

As part of the redesign, some courses have been adjusted or combined to better connect classroom instruction with hands-on clinical application. The goal, university leaders say, is to help students apply key concepts more quickly and effectively in real-world healthcare settings.

The updated timeline will apply to students entering the nursing major beginning in fall 2026, including rising juniors and transfer students. Freshmen entering as nursing majors will now be able to complete the program in four years, a change expected to reduce overall costs.

UAH will continue to offer its accelerated three-semester BSN option for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree. That program includes an apprenticeship component, allowing students to work within hospital units during their studies and transition directly into those roles after graduation.

University leaders say both pathways reflect a broader effort to address healthcare workforce needs in North Alabama by preparing job-ready graduates.

Applications for the fall 2026 nursing cohort are due by July 1, with a November 1 deadline for spring 2027 admission.
