TUSCUMBIA — Tuscumbia attorney Brent Woodall has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Place 2 on the Alabama Public Service Commission.
Woodall said the heart of his campaign is to end what he calls the PSC’s “hidden tax” that’s quietly hurting Alabama families whose utility companies are regulated by the PSC.
The PSC does not regulate rates for the Tennessee Valley Authority or the utilities it serves.
“Every single month, when you think you’re just paying for electricity or natural gas, you’re not,” he said. “Hidden in your bills is a tax you didn’t vote for, a tax most people don’t even know exists. The PSC takes millions more than it needs from the utilities — money that comes straight out of your pockets — and instead of giving it back to you, they ship it off to Montgomery for politicians to spend however they want.
“I’m here to put a stop to it. As a conservative, I recognize that government should live within its means, just like you do. If you overpay, you deserve that money back. Whether it’s through lower rates, rebates, or refunds — that money belongs to you, not the state. And when I’m elected, we’re going to cut this hidden tax out of your utility bill once and for all.”
Woodall also criticized Place 2 Commissioner Chris V. Beeker III for failing to go to work enough to even understand the PSC’s work.
“He doesn’t fully understand what the PSC does or how his votes impact Alabama families,” Woodall said. “I’m not running to play politics. I’m running to fight for Alabama families and bring transparency, fairness, and accountability to the Public Service Commission.”
Woodall has served as an assistant U.S. attorney, an assistant Alabama attorney general, the Chief of Staff for a commissioner at the PSC, and a central staff attorney for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals.
He lives in Colbert County with his wife Marie and their two children, Hannah Grace and Daniel.
