Detours planned for I-565 flyover work at Town Madison

MADISON — Motorists on Interstate 565 in Madison will face detours for the next several weeks as work continues on the Town Madison interchange, the city of Madison and the Alabama Department of Transportation said.

Beginning Sunday night, crews will be setting bridge girders for the flyover at the interchange near Toyota Field. Due to the overhead work, periodic weeknight closures of one direction of I-565 at a time — westbound or eastbound — will be necessary for the safety of the public.

Weather permitting, all westbound traffic will be detoured to Madison Boulevard at Exit 13 and return to I-565 at Wall-Triana Highway (Exit 9). The detour will be implemented between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. nightly Sunday through Thursday.

Officials said signal timings on Madison Boulevard have been modified to accommodate the detour, and Madison Police Department will be assisting with traffic control.

The eastbound detour, which will be implemented on future dates, will start at Exit 9 to Madison Boulevard and return to the interstate at Exit 13.

All detours will be limited to late night/early morning hours, when traffic volume is lowest, to minimize travel impacts. Work on the project is expected to continue over the next two to three months, the release said.

The girders are massive steel beams that will support the bridge decks on the westbound on- and off-ramps under construction at Exit 10.
