Off The Record: The latest rumors and rumblings in North Alabama
Finebaum next week?
After weeks of speculation, it looks like the rumors could be true, Paul Finebaum is reportedly set to announce a run for the U.S. Senate next week. The longtime sports radio host and ESPN analyst, has been teasing a possible political pivot since September. Finebaum would be entering the Republican primary to replace outgoing Sen. Tommy Tuberville, facing off against frontrunner and Attorney General Steve Marshall. If he makes it official, Finebaum’s entry would still add another unexpected twist to an already headline-grabbing election cycle in Alabama.
Turner makes it official
We first mentioned a potential chairman’s race in Limestone County back in September and now it’s official. District 2 County Commissioner Johnny Turner announced on social media this week that he will seek the position held by Chairman Collin Daly. Turner wrote that there needs to be a change in leadership. One local political insider told OTR, “Daly is very popular throughout the county and Turner is considered an effective leader, but this one might come down to who your friends are.”
Michelin takes on the South
The culinary world is heating up ahead of the 2025 Michelin Guide reveal for the American South, set for Monday in Greenville, S.C. It’s the first regional guide for the South, spotlighting restaurants from Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. A number of Alabama chefs are rumored to be in the running for honors including Birmingham’s “Big Four” and a few other highly recognizable names from throughout the state.
Bank Independent kicks off Toy Share
The spirit of giving is alive and well at Bank Independent as the Helping Hands Foundation announced this week its 15th annual Toy Share drive kicks off Monday. Every branch across North Alabama will be collecting new, unwrapped toys through Nov. 28, with monetary donations also accepted through PayPal. Last year alone, the effort brought in more than 5,000 toys and nearly $2,800 in cash donations for local children, adding to an incredible 14-year total of over $50,000 in cash contributions and a community impact exceeding $1.1 million. Here’s hoping this year’s drive makes an even bigger difference for North Alabama families in need.
