Huntsville International Airport recorded its busiest month on record in May. Airport officials say the increased growth comes from strong local demand and expanding airline services.
According to the Port of Huntsville, the airport handled 173,748 passengers in May, a 10.7% increase over May 2025. Through the first five months of 2026, passenger traffic is up 7.6% compared with the same period last year.
“These record-breaking numbers are the result of our community choosing to fly local and support Huntsville International Airport,” Port of Huntsville Board Chair Joey Ceci said in a statement.
The growth comes as airlines continue expanding at Huntsville International. In May, Allegiant Air launched nonstop service to Gulf Shores International Airport, giving the carrier four nonstop destinations from Huntsville. Breeze Airways also increased service to Orlando International Airport to daily flights, providing seven-day-a-week access to one of the airport’s most popular vacation destinations.
Huntsville International currently offers nonstop flights to 18 destinations across the country through Allegiant, American, Breeze, Delta and United.
“If travelers continue to fly local and check HSV’s competitive fares first, we believe the airport is well-positioned for continued growth,” Huntsville International Airport CEO Butch Roberts said.
The airport has experienced steady growth over the past several years as North Alabama’s population and economy have expanded. Huntsville International serves more than 1.7 million passengers annually and is operated by the Port of Huntsville, which also oversees the International Intermodal Center, Jetplex Industrial Park and Huntsville International Spaceport.
Airport officials said they are continuing to work with airlines to pursue new opportunities and expand destination options for travelers across North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley.
