Huntsville Hospital Trauma Team trains community to ‘Stop the Bleed’

Community members learned Wednesday morning that saving a life after a traumatic injury doesn’t require a medical degree. It requires knowing what to do in the first few minutes.

Huntsville Hospital‘s Trauma Services team hosted a free “Stop the Bleed” training in the hospital’s main lobby, teaching participants how to control severe bleeding through tourniquet application, wound packing and direct pressure.

The hands-on session was held in recognition of National Trauma Awareness Month and Stop the Bleed Month.

Bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death following injury, and the training is designed to close the gap between when an injury occurs and when first responders arrive. As North Alabama’s only Level I Trauma Center, Huntsville Hospital led participants through real-world scenarios including traffic crashes, industrial accidents, gunshot wounds, stabbings and other traumatic events where immediate bleeding control can mean the difference between life and death.

The training model mirrors the public health approach behind CPR certification, equipping everyday bystanders with practical skills to act quickly when seconds matter.

Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and skills initiative that grew out of lessons learned from mass casualty events. Training is available to the general public and requires no medical background.
