Two of Huntsville’s prominent design firms are joining forces.
Matheny Goldmon and Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) announced Wednesday that they have merged following nearly two years of collaboration, a partnership that began while pursuing the new Madison County Courthouse project.
The firms said working together on plans for the new Madison County courthouse demonstrated how their expertise complemented one another, ultimately leading to the decision to combine operations.
“Our combined expertise had the potential to deliver the best outcome for Madison County on a project of this magnitude,” said GMC’s Jeffrey Brewer. “We had tremendous respect for the Matheny Goldmon team, and the partnership proved to be a natural fit.”
Earlier this year, the Madison County Commission selected the firms to design the county’s new courthouse.
Founded in 2006 by Paul Matheny and Marc Goldmon, Matheny Goldmon provides architecture and interior design services from offices in Huntsville and Nashville. The 30-person firm has designed many of North Alabama’s best-known projects, including The Orion Amphitheater, the Eloise McDonald Propst Guest Center at the Huntsville Botanical Garden, Mars Music Hall and The Garage at Clinton Row.
Matheny Goldmon Principal Paul Matheny said the firms discovered they worked well together throughout the courthouse project.
“We truly believe we’re better together,” Matheny said. “Joining GMC allows us to continue creating places that bring people together while expanding the services and resources available to our clients.”
GMC, which established its Huntsville office in 2007, has more than 700 employees across the Southeast and offers architecture, engineering, planning, landscape architecture, environmental services and disaster recovery, among other disciplines.
The firm has worked on major projects throughout the region, including Huntsville City Hall, the new Alabama State House, Auburn University’s STEM and Agricultural Complex, Mobile Arena and Gulf Shores High School.
The firms said integration efforts are already underway, with GMC’s Huntsville employees expected to relocate into the Matheny Goldmon office before the end of the year. They said the transition is designed to ensure continuity for both employees and clients while expanding the combined firm’s capabilities across North Alabama.
