A coalition of public and private partners is moving forward with plans for a major sports tourism and mixed-use development at one of North Alabama’s busiest transportation crossroads.
Synergy Sports, Limestone County, the City of Decatur and Crossroads LLC announced Monday a cooperative effort to develop a regional sports tourism destination near the intersection of Interstate 65 and Alabama Highway 20, approximately one mile west of the Huntsville-Decatur interchange.
The announcement describes the project as a large mixed-use development anchored by a multi-sport complex designed to attract tournaments, teams and visitors from across Alabama, Tennessee and the broader Southeast.
In addition to the sports facilities, plans call for complementary retail, residential, hotel, hospitality and family entertainment components aimed at serving both visitors and local residents.
Project leaders said the development represents a significant investment in the region’s future and could further position North Alabama as a destination for sports tourism.
The proposed sports complex would feature baseball and softball fields, multi-purpose fields for soccer, flag football, lacrosse and other field sports, as well as a future indoor facility to expand year-round programming opportunities.
Developers said the facility is intended to serve not only as a tourism engine but also as a community asset that provides local residents with enhanced recreational opportunities.
Sports tourism has become an increasingly competitive economic development strategy for communities across the Southeast, generating visitor spending at hotels, restaurants, retail stores and entertainment venues while creating jobs and expanding local tax revenue.
Project partners noted that large-scale sports complexes often serve as catalysts for surrounding commercial development and infrastructure improvements while creating consistent activity throughout the year.
The planned location near the intersection of Interstate 65 and Highway 20 places the development within easy reach of Huntsville, Decatur and other major population centers across the Tennessee Valley.
North Carolina-based Synergy Sports is assisting with the project and helping guide the sports tourism planning process. The company specializes in sports facility strategy and destination development and will work with project partners as planning and community engagement efforts move forward.
Additional details, including project plans, proposed uses and development timelines, are expected to be unveiled during a public announcement event within the next one to two months.
