Defense contractor L3Harris Technologies announced it has expanded its Advanced Manufacturing Facility-South in Huntsville through a $25 million investment that adds 130,000 square feet of manufacturing space as the company continues increasing production capacity for solid rocket motor programs.
The expansion brings L3Harris’ total footprint in Huntsville to approximately 670,000 square feet across three facilities, according to the company.
Company officials said the additional manufacturing space will help meet growing demand from the U.S. military for munitions and propulsion systems.
“The additional space allows us to lean forward and surge capacity in a way that directly aligns with the Department of Defense’s demand for critical munition acceleration,” said Ken Bedingfield, president of Missile Solutions for L3Harris. “Huntsville’s expansion at AMF-South gives us the flexibility we need to grow quickly and continue delivering for our customers.”
The company said the expansion builds on a series of recent investments in Huntsville, including a tripling of capital spending between 2024 and 2025.
According to L3Harris, Huntsville operations currently support more than half of the company’s solid rocket motor programs through the production of inert components, with manufacturing output continuing to increase annually.
The company noted that the AMF-South site was able to expand rapidly because the facility already contained much of the infrastructure necessary to support additional production capacity.
The announcement comes as Huntsville continues to see significant growth in defense manufacturing and missile-related industries, driven in part by increased federal investments in munitions production and national defense modernization efforts.
L3Harris said it is currently hiring for a variety of positions associated with the expansion, including mechanical and manufacturing engineers, project engineers, quality specialists, machinists and composite technicians.
L3Harris is one of the nation’s largest defense technology companies, providing systems and services across air, land, sea, space and cyber domains. The company manufactures a variety of propulsion, missile and defense-related technologies supporting U.S. military and allied operations.
