Sizzle and Smoke at Riverfest features first triple steak cookoff in Alabama

DECATUR – After a one-year break due to the pandemic in 2020 and sluggish ticket sales in 2021, Decatur’s annual Riverfest festival is returning as Sizzle and Smoke. The inaugural festival is Sept. 23-24 at Ingalls Harbor in Decatur.

Mosaic Mentoring of North Alabama and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Posse are hosting a Steak Cookoff Association-sanctioned event — a first for Alabama. Anyone can take their skills to the grill and enter the competition as long as they are members of the SCA. Membership to join SCA is $40 and allows members to cook in steak events anywhere in the United States.

Local businesses, organizations and weekend grillers are encouraged to register to compete.

Competitors will turn in three steaks for judging: one on Sept. 23; and two more on Sept. 24.

Mosaic Mentoring and the Sheriff’s Posse will provide ribeye steaks to ensure a level playing field. The competition steaks are included in the registration fee.

The winning steak earns a $1,000 payout. The second place steak receives $500, and third place is $300. Fourth place will receive $200, fifth place is $150 and sixth through tenth place receive $100.

Winners of all three steak turn-ins will receive a golden ticket to the World Food Championships Finals in Dallas.

The competition also offers an Anything Goes Appetizer ancillary and a Jack Daniel’s cocktail ancillary with both paying to fifth place.

For the kids, there is a cheeseburger competition. Kids ages 4 to 13 compete for a payout of up to $100 for first place, $75 for second place, $50 for third place and $25 each for fourth through tenth place.

Registration by clicking here.

A cooks meeting is 4:30 p.m. Sept. 23 with awards at 8:30 p.m. The Sept. 24 cookoff begins at 10 a.m. with awards at 6:30 p.m.

There will also be food trucks and a steak sandwich sale to benefit Mosaic Mentoring and the Sheriff’s Posse along with raffle prizes and a silent auction.

Admission is free.
