After largely disappearing from the official agenda last year, the Pentagon’s “Golden Dome for America” missile defense initiative is expected to be front and center at this year’s Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville.
The 2026 Space and Missile Defense Symposium, scheduled for Aug. 11–13 at the Von Braun Center, will feature senior leaders directly tied to the program, including General Michael Guetlein, who serves as the Defense Department’s direct reporting program manager for Golden Dome.
This marks a notable shift from 2025, when a planned “Golden Dome for America” panel was removed from the symposium’s official agenda. At the time, organizers said information on the program would be released separately by the government.
Discussion of the initiative ultimately took place during a separate Missile Defense Agency industry summit that required its own restricted registration.
Since then, defense leaders have begun speaking more openly about Golden Dome, particularly during the Space Symposium held in Colorado Springs, CO in April. There, the initiative emerged as a central theme, with officials describing it as moving from conceptual planning into technical execution.
Guetlein has said in recent remarks that the program is advancing with contracts being awarded and milestones being met, while emphasizing a layered defense approach designed to counter ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missile threats.
Other senior leaders scheduled to speak at SMD 2026 include Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of U.S. Space Command, and Lt. Gen. Heath Collins, director of the Missile Defense Agency, both of whom play key roles in advancing the broader architecture.
Lt. Gen. John Rafferty, commanding general of JTF-Gold, is also confirmed and potentially outlining how Huntsville-based assets could serve as an operational hub for the Golden Dome framework.
The symposium, widely considered one of the nation’s premier gatherings for the missile defense and space community, brings together military leadership, defense contractors and policymakers to discuss priorities shaping national security.
