Keeping it reel: Annual youth fishing rodeo set for Huntsville lagoon

HUNTSVILLE – Forget about landing the big one, a lunker some call it. It’s the one tagged that will be valued, catfish to be specific.

Cash, awards and prizes will be on the line for young anglers catching the whiskered, marked mudcats at the 40th annual Wally Vess Fishing Rodeo.

The city of Huntsville and the Huntsville Parks and Recreation Department are hosting the event Saturday free for anglers aged 6-12 at Brahan Spring Park Lagoon.

“This event holds a special place in our hearts,” Huntsville Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett said. “It’s a wonderful way for families to unwind and enjoy the simple joy of fishing.”

Registration starts at 7 a.m. The fishing rodeo begins at 8 a.m. and will be followed by award announcements at 10.

Through the support from Buster’s Bait and Tackle and over 20 community partners, the lagoon will be teeming with 250 pounds of catfish. Also, top anglers across various categories will have the chance to win awards.

While children can receive assistance with baiting their lines and handling their catch, they must independently hook and reel in their fish. Participants are encouraged to bring their own chairs, fishing equipment and bait.
